Big radeonhd guide for 10.5.7

after you update to 10.5.7, if all works fine for you with raeonhd card – skip this tutorial

radeonhd 2×00 3×00 4870 4850 users just install this natit and enjoy – Natit pkg link

now about 48×0 users only:

Default natit posted above uses Motmot as framebuffer driver, Motmot known to have problems with powermanagement and memory clocks (results in screen shakes, affects only 4850/4830/4850×2), default natit has a workaround for this, for 4850 users.

There is another framebuffer for 48×0, called quail, it doesnt have screen shakes problem, but has less output capabilities on 4850/4830 (only secodn dvi port works as dvi, with patched quail) , here is natit which make use of Quail – Natit for Quail pkg link , use it as alternative for default natit, if Motmot has issues for you.

Now patched framebuffers: it’s patched Motmot and Quail to get rid of dvi2vga dongle trick (or hdmi2dvi + dvi2vga on some cards),
the package called “Patched framebuffers for 48×0 and 3870×2″ – recomended for 4850×2/4850/4830/ 4870 with hdmi/DP/VGA outputs

Patched ATIRadeonX2000.kext, for exotic cards like – 4830 4890 4870×2 4850×2 3870×2 , to get QE/CI , its called “QE_CI_Exotic_cards”

ATI_init pkg for MacPro users(4890 4870×2 will need the file above also, natit inside) – ATI init pkg link , two pkgs, that’s all you need.

Last thing, 3870×2 users – install default natit, patched framebuffers pkg(only if you dont have ATY_Triakis.kext installed yet) and patched ATIRadeonX2000 pkg.

Pkg with patched files available at irc://irc.osx86.hu #radeonhd channel, first link in topic

P.S. for dummies, for 4890 and 4870×2 you need to install default natit and patched ATIRadeonX2000.kext pkgs

for 4830/4850×2 you need either default natit , patched X2000.kext  and patched framebuffer,  or quail_natit , patched x2000.kext and patched framebuffers.

Please excuse me for my dumb question, I really have to get this straight. I have a 2008 MP, and would like to use my pc 1GB 4870 card for Boot Camp gaming. I understand when using natit no flashing is requiered. With this method am I going to have working fan control in OS X on my 4870, or it can only be achieved by flashing it?

To tell you the truth, as an audio guy I only need quiet presence of the 4870 when working in OS X. Even having video signal is not that important, the 2600XT suits me well :)

Matrixfan, just install ati_init pkg and report results.

    hi,

I runned the 4870 with no Problems. So I updated to 10.5.7, with no Problems. Just running as beforce with CI and QE

Only thing I fear is still to change resolution !?! Can I try ? I started Warcraft3 It went into main menu with 1248×1024 .. so does it function ?

In 10.5.6 I put in the Framework opengl of 10.5.7 and the new natit and motmot + I killed the motomot in Apple driver … since that I have a functional 4870 … so now … what to do ?! Something to change ? Can I change resolution ? :)

next thin is … I have
    1x DVI
    1x VGA
    1x HDMI/ Displayport

I only can use DVI … how to enable the others ? expecially the VGA ?

    Hi,

just updated to 10.5.7 and the natit above.
    Wow, my Spahire 4870 512MB is working with QE/CI !! :-)

Also the fan seems to be controlled correctly now (-> macmunch)

But one issue still exists: Powermanagement.

Still unable to resume from standby mode.

    What can I do ?

    Thanks

    Netkas,
I updated to 10.5.7 (ATI HD 4830) with no issues.
But still no native resolution and QE / CI since that card is not supported.
Do you think installing the new kexts that you talk about above with solve this for me.

Thanks for the extremely good work.

Hi! Does anyone know if I’m going to have problems if I install from a retail 10.5.6 and than I update to 10.5.7? I’ll have the compatibility with my hd4850 without installing any other kext?
    Thanks in advice.. :)

Hm I still don’t understand. I don’t have a working CI-QX on my 4890 asus card so I want to install the “QE_CI_Exotic_cards” file but where do I download it? I can’t find it in any of the links you have posted.

Does anybody know if these patches will work oh an HD4350 512Mb? I think we should try, because that card is really cheap and will be a good option for a basic Hackintosh.

Using the default natit gets me full resolution and QE_CI on my Sapphire 4830 dual dvi model, but I can’t seem to get the Quail natit to work with it. I just get a blue screen that occasionally draws the cursor and sometimes more for not even a second.

  19. Dest
    May 13th, 2009 | 9:05 pm

Netkas, I’m not referring to sleep. I’m talking about power management as in downclocking in 2d mode. The card seems to run hotter in OS X than in Windows and I suspect this is because in OS X the powerplay stuff isn’t working right.

I was just wondering if there’s a package that fixes it for the 4870 or if this even works at all in OS X.

  20. lou
    May 13th, 2009 | 9:10 pm

Forgot to mention that the default natit gives me the bouncing screen and is why I don’t want to use it instead of quail.

    May 13th, 2009 | 11:13 pm

I have a PowerColor 4850 1GB. Was working fine under 10.5.6, QE/CI, no pauses. Now I have updated to 10.5.7, and the cursor stop every 3 – 4 seconds. I’ve tried every Natit package available – including Quail. I’ve also tried swapping round the DVI ports. No success yet.

Any ideas on how to fix it?
    Cheers,
    - Tim.

Hi netkas, I have an original mac pro, I purchased 2 days ago an ati radeon HD4870 sapphire 512Mb.

If I can use without patch the bios, Could I have any problem in future updates of leopard?

  25. Noble
    May 14th, 2009 | 3:47 am

Thanks for all the work, Netkas! However, I’m still having issues with my 4830, Sapphire VGA/DVI/HDMI. I installed the exotic QE/CI and the patched 3870×2 pkgs you supplied. With the normal Natit, I get full resolution and QE/CI, but it bounces, I can’t change resolution (blue screen), and only DVI seems to work, no VGA. With the Quail Natit, I get nothing no matter what I do and I’ve tried all the ports along with adapters for them (HDMI -> DVI, DVI ->VGA). The best I can get is a blue screen on the VGA port, but only when DVI is plugged in as well. Not sure what’s going on, but I’m crossing my fingers and hoping there’s a fix in there.

Also, your thread on Insanelymac with this info has disappeared.

    May 14th, 2009 | 4:40 am

    xauron, try and tell us.

the natit has bios image of apple’s 4870, so if the card cant work with apple’s 4870 rom, then it may fail with aty_init

    May 14th, 2009 | 5:08 am

    @netkas

first off, thanks for all the work you’ve put into these 48×0 cards. being able to actually boot into osx with my 4830 is a big relief for me, even if it’s only been in 1024×768.

the patched framebuffers and the default seem to be working alright with my HDMI/DVI/VGA 4830, but anytime I install the patched x2000.kext i end up with some really strange screen artifacts that cover the monitor. w/out the x2000, my card is recognized, but no qe/ci and i can’t change rez. Any ideas?

  28. May 14th, 2009 | 8:23 am

I have a Sapphire 4830 dual dvi and a get a kernal panic after installing all the patches described above. When I remove the Natit.kext extension it boots but only displays a black screen with artifacts where the mouse is supposed to be. When I move the mouse it creates more artifacts. I don’t know what else to try. I used vnc to see what was going on and I saw a bunch of artifacts with images from a game I played earlier today on windows xp that was so weird… If I remove the ATIradeonx2000.kext it gives me default drivers at 1024×768. I wonder if it has something to do with my motherboard, it is a biostar G31-M7 TE and I had a lot of trouble just getting os x on there, I had to do the dsdt patch and use older ACPI and APIC kexts. I did try both Natit.kext (quail and default) they both give me a kernel panic. I went to the system logs but it never registers those panics. Any help would be appreciated!

  29. May 14th, 2009 | 9:29 am

i have tried everything under the sun.
i know this is not the proper thread but man… i can get everything to work again on my msi wind u120, Except the GMA 950 and the Clamshell. do you have any info at all that could help me?

    May 14th, 2009 | 9:43 am

    xauron,

In theory, ATY_init enables the card without having to flash it, but I am not sure if an apple card is required in another slot for OS X initialisation.
The problem is that ATY_init does not seem to manage recent 4870s. People at macbidouille.com could not get them to work.
So it seems that ATY_init needs to include the BIOS for those recent cards.

If you have a 4870, you don’t need the patched radeon kext, so you should still have hardware acceleration after system updates. But you need an installed ATY_init on any OS X you will use to boot your Mac Pro, including a DVD.
Note also that you won’t have video output before the drivers loads, so you can’t choose the boot drive with the alt key if your only display is connected to the PC card.

OR, you can flash your card without using any software patch.

Same problem as Tim, but with Sapphire 4870 1GB. Working perfectly on 10.5.6 with DVI connector plugged in 2nd port (the farthest from motherboard) and DVI-VGA dongle in the other port. With 10.5.7 I have mouse lagging with all Natit packages. Tried also swapping ports, changing to Quail framebuffer, and making a fresh install.

    Awesome work, netkas.

Reports from Mac Pro owners confirm that ATY_init does not enable the recent 4870 cards that cannot be flashed by the apple BIOS (Macs reboot repeatedly).

I’d be interesting in patching natit.kext with custom 4870 BIOS. It’s in the file info.plist, correct?

I have localized the tag ATY,bin_image for the 4870 series, in text edit. I suppose the BIOS is contained in the following section. Should I just replace this section? What part of the original BIOS should I use? And what software do you recommend for this?
Sorry, I am not familiar with this stuff, but thanks a lot.

    Thanks netkas,

One question: would it be possible to enable different versions of the 4870 in Mac Pros, with a single natit.kext? As I understand, what I proposed above will likely remove the support of the reference design 4870.
I suppose that it would require one BIOS for each specific version. This is beyond my skills.

i’m here to report. I have an MSI 4890. I installed natit pkg & exotic cards pkg. QE/CI work fine, but I have an odd problem with dual displays.

When I plugged in with 1 port it boots fine, with 2 ports it just shows the blue screen. However plugging the 2nd dvi port after I’m in leopard it’ll go dual display then freeze.

Reading this thread I’ll try a dvi to vga and see if that eliminates the problem

    Hi Netkas

Impressive work so far, i have a PC with USB stick and radeon HD 4890. Everything is working perfect under Mac OS X 10.5.7, but… im only able to get mirrored dual screen. Not possible to set up the two screen working on extended desktop, it doesnt even show the option to choose between mirrored and extended in the video preferences.
What would you suggest me to do ? Maybe this is something that you can fix in an update, it would be so great.

Perhaps I should ask if there’s any hope of getting the DVI/VGA/HDMI 4830s up and running or if I should get a 9800GT at this point. Do you think it’s just a matter of tweaking to get those 4830s up and running or is it a more complicated problem?

FYI, I have a Sapphire Radeon HD 4850 and with 10.5.7 I am getting full resolution, and QE/CI without modifying any of the kexts. However, I absolutely must have the VGA to DVI adapter plugged into the second DVI port (I only use one monitor) in order to get anything to show up, otherwise I just have a blank screen.

macmunch, I installed first update 10.5.7, I got a weird white screen with strange blocks. Booted in safe mode (-x) and installed the Natit.kext (motmot), got a black screen. Then installed the patched framebuffers package (ATINDRV.kext) and everything works :) .

about 4890 and macpro, a quote from macrumors forum:

“I can confirm that you can run a Radeon HD 4890 without any Mac compatible card in slot 1.

I just removed the stock Radeon HD 2600XT and the Radeon HD 4890 runs fine alone.”

btw, such configuration needs only ati_init pkg and exotic cards pkg

    Hi Netkas,

    Thx for all your efforts!
My system Dell Studio 17 with HD 3650 Mobility
Tested: Blank 10.5.7 (updated 10.5.6 xxx release with Apple’s update)
Result: only 1024×768 nog kext loaded

Test2: Ran safe mode (-x) and std natit from yesterday
    Result: blocked screen

Test3 : Ran safemode (-x) abnd ATIX2000 source version 53410 plus natit for 3650 + permission repair, cache cleans
Result: blank screen (just a tiny blue vertical line at the extreme left of the lcd)

Problem now it that even in Safe Mode (-x) osx loads Natit, so i cannot get into osx anymore. Will try a fresh 10.5.6(xxx release) install + 10.5.7 update

Please advice what to do/test for you.

I am happy to report to you that my Sapphire HD 4830 – 2 DVI port card is fully up and running with 1920*1080 res with full QE / CI support.

Had to flash the card to get the screen jumps to stop – but as of now i see no difference in sound / heat after the flash versus before the flash.

Your work on this has been a tremendous help.

    Thank you so much.

    @Metheorion

What exactly did you change in the BIOS? I’ve been hunting around to see what would be a stable change of the clock/voltage values (much less the values to change), so any insight you could provide would be excellent.

  70. metheorion
    May 15th, 2009 | 3:10 pm

Actually, you will first need to get a backup of your bios using GPUZ. Then modify that BIOS using Radeon Bios Editor (RBE) – i basically followed a friends “work in process” tutorial and modded bios to flash my bios. But he had set all the lower frequencies to 900Mhz (the upper ones were not changed) and if I remember correctly, the voltages were all 1.044v. Save this Bios and then flash using ATIFlash (you will need to create a bootable flash drive for this.

    And that was it…

Again credit to my friend xris on the #radeonhd IRC channel for this. If you probably wait for sometime today, he is planning to post that tutorial with the necessary files and that way you can avoid changing the frequencies / voltages urself.
Let me know if you need any other info.

    Netkas,

It seems that at least one Mac Pro owner (1.1) had to keep an Apple X1900XT in one slot, so the Mac would boot with a 4890, using ATY_Init and Natit.

Sapphire 4830, no luck – best I can get with these files is with quail, solid blue screen with occasional draw of desktop – all others are giving me either black and white mash with crash (guessing panic) or colored mash (enough that I can guess where the shutdown is.) Tried both DVI ports, both filled or only single, and even tried the dvi->svga only.

I do have an older set of packages (64bit came across a working accel on insanelymac forum) that give me QE/CI and a jumping screen – though I’d rather not try to reflash this card again.

    Got Sapphire 4830/2xDVI+Svid.
I have a monitor that uses VGA to connect. I use DVI-VGA dongle to connect monitor.

When Natit tries to load the correct framebuffer, booting verbose mode the system freezes, non-verbose I get a screen that tells me to restart.
(Natit without framebuffer boots fine, detects the card but under display I have wrong resolution and it doesn’t say the name of my display, just Display)

Since other people have gotten the same card working, I’m lead to believe that my problems are with the monitor being VGA. Am I correct and is there any way to fix this?

I did a clean install, tried 10.5.7 update first then the ATI HD package (insanelymac), got no resolution support, no qe/ci.

    got resolution but no ci/qe…

oh and I just tested 10.5.6, the netkas package doesn’t give me ci/qe but the ati hd pkg does. Both give res support in 10.5.6…

any idea what is contained in the ~50MB ati hd pkg install that might be helping provide ci/qe?

Some connection or compatibilty problem occurs between 10.5.6 and x.7 with the ati hd pkg

for some reason the natkas pkg doesn’t seem to provide ci/qe in x.6, which is probably why I can’t get it to work in x.7

I just got my hackintosh set up (Retail DVD + Bootloader on CD). Unfortunately, the 7600GS I had spared for it died and I had to buy a 4670 because it was just great deal at the store. Little did I know that There’s no official support for it.

    Hello Netkas,

one question for my strange mouse movement problem. Quartz GL is disabled.
My Radeon 4890 works fine with your help, except Dual Screen, but I can wait for a better driver.
Resolution change, QE and CI works like a charme but only with the mouse problem.
Every second or two stops the mouse pointer for a short time.
When I remove the natit.kext the mouse works but the support for the Radeon 4890 is gone.
Is something happens in the driver that check anything in the background.
Must I edit the natit.kext with my monitor string or anything else.
My old Card the Radeon 3870 works absolutely perfect, with all features.
The Radeon 4890 I buy for testing and must give it back if it doesn’t work.

I there any chance to get the mouse working with the installed natit.kext?

Running a MacPro with 10.5.7, i had to use the Natit Pkg at top to make my flashed Sapphire 1GB 4870 work. The only problems I am aware are the half-speed link and that on connecting a second monitor the display comes out correctly but the machine hangs. In addition, there is a curious entry on the pci listing:/Users/VC/Desktop/pastedGraphic.png
This is likely a leftover from previous messing around with natit pkgs.
Netkas I would appreciate your telling how to deal with this entry. Thanks.

Thanks for your work netkas. My sapphire radeon 4890 works good by installing provided natit and qe_ci_exotic cards package. Noticed that my system crashes frequently though. Are fan control settings taken from apple’s 4870 settings?

Format and installed 10.5.6 ipc. I installed 4830_64bitmod_motmotfb. I did the boot “-f-v”. The resolution was 1680×1050, and the CI / QE enabled. I am using the HDMI port adapter with a HDMI> DVI on the Samsung. In outher DVI port is the DVI> VGA.

HD4890 working well, but only on one screen. Same as many others, if I have two connected via DVI it freezes on boot at the blue screen, if I attach the 2nd monitor via VGA it shows the boot logo until it gets to the blue screen but then the 2nd monitor goes black and reports no signal :(

Would be great if there was a solution to this, but I guess I can live with it for now..

    Thanks netkas you rock :D

4890 working great with one dvi connection, any attempt at the 2nd causes freeze/panic.

Also display seems a tad laggy, might be my imagination.. QE etc all enabled and working.

Will be loving this more when i can use the 2nd monitor!

    Can anyone help me?

My 4890 works fine with Netkas driver, but when I installed the natit.kext my mouse freeze every two second for a short while, also the Scroll-Button. I try a USB-Mouse and a Bluetooth Mighty Mouse. Has anyone the same problem?
Can anyone give me a hint.
I try it with a fresh iPC Install and with a 10.5.6 Universal Final v2 Install.
Update with Apple Updater to 10.5.7 with my Gigabyte Board P35-DS3P
With 10.5.6 the mouse hangs too.

    Hi All hackintosh enthusiasts,

I got my Diamond ATI Radeon HD 4870 512mb working successfully with QE/CI support. Used OSx 10.5.7 & Natit pkg.

    * I used iAtkos 5i (10.5.5) distro with Voodoo kernel. Selected the the VGA driver and compatible network, sata driers.

    * Then I had to start in safe mode with ( -x ) kernel param, without the parenthesis. If you start in normal mode it will flicker and just show a blank & pixlated screen.

    * Then in safe mode I have updated to 10.5.7 from the Mac menu ‘Update’ option. This will install the Vanilla 9.7 kernel and I had to enable the vanilla kernel in Boot.plist file changing the kernel mode from ‘custom’ to ‘mach_kernel’. Remember I had to do it in single user (which is root console) mode with -s kernel param, because I could not find the root password for iAtkos distro.

    * After restart I still got the flickering, and then safe mode again and installed the Natit pkg.

    * Another restart… voila! It worked with hardware accelaration and QE/CI support in 1080P resulution.

I tried nVidia GTS 250 and GTX 260 but did not have any luck, so I had to gamble with a new 4870 and it paid off.

    Thanks netkas and thanks everybody!

    Hi Gollum, Hi Netkas

I’ve tested my old 19 Zoll Samsung Syncmaster DVI Monitor.
And it works without the mouse stutter every 2 seconds!

The new one is a 24 Zoll Viewsonic Optiquest Q241wb. This monitor works only with
    the mouse problem.

The question is now: Where is the problem with this monitor.
Can you make a little bit finetuning with the driver so the Viewsonic works also.

Or can I try another DVI-Cable with more pins?

    regards
and many thanks for the driver and your work!

Hi. From iPC 10.5.6 (basic install just the kext for ich and jmicron installed) it won’t boot. It would show the Apple logo then later a small no parking sign. My mobo is a GA-965p-DS3 rev. 1 and GPU is a Palit 4870 1GB Sonic. Thanks in advance. Gbu.

    Hi Alvin,

In the boot menu give -v option to boot in verbose mode, then you can probably see where it fails. This will help a lot.
If you think it is the graphics card issue, boot in safe mode, -x key at boot menu.

Hi Netkas and those having problems. Thanks for the time and effort also. Days of trial and error, this is how installed 10.5.7 (only the ICH driver was checked)can be installed on a 965P-DS3, Palit 4870 Sonic from iPC 10.5.6, all SATA . No additional kexts on the Extra folder. It seems to be an AHCI issue. The principle is to set it to as close as a real Mac (including 4 sec power off button in the BIOS). Focus is only with being able to update to 10.5.7 and this GPU:

    a) AHCI in BIOS disabled during iPC boot (iPC distro needs AHCI support)
    b) BIOS changed to AHCI before 10.5.7 update, booted with -x, safe mode (used combo to be sure, won’t boot if BIOS is not in AHCI)
    c) for this GPU move ATIX2000.kext by dragging it to Thrash then to a folder to keep it (this kext conflicts with this GPU)
    d) update, restart
    e) optional: before or after 10.5.7 update-installed Chameleon 2 RC1, detected proper specifications of CPU.

GPU conflicts with ATINDRV.kext conflicts with Natit XFX and Enabler for Nvidia and Multiple cards

Still nothing on the GPU ever after:
    a) GPU has two BIOSes (switch but not on the fly), I took my chanced to atiflash it to vendor XFX
    b) flashed it to 4870.ROM for the real Mac Pro (booting with the other GPU BIOS, turbo mode ones, then switching it to 4870.ROM at Bootloader. Didn’t work coz’ once booted, I guess it loads the BIOS that original booted the computer to memory. If restarted then switched to the 4870 for real Mac Pro, the BIOS won’t know it.

results: updated to 10.5.7 normally but still no 3D acceleration, resolution stuck at 1024

Gbu. (if there’s another ATI driver for OSX86 that works with this GPU, please post)

@ Netkas, thanks for your ongoing support. I had the same issue with my Sapphire 4890 as others on here, I install 10.5.6 via iPC and then update to 10.5.7, then:

    I install ATI_INIT followed by QE_CI_Exotic_Cards, reboot.
Everything works fine no mouse lag, all resolutions, QE supported.

But when I have turn on my HDTV HDMI->DVI as second display, it hangs and restarts and just hangs at blue screen. I turn it off, restart with just main monitor, everything is back to normal but I get pretty bad mouse lag.

Is there a way to reinstall these packages or a fix for this problem? My Hackintosh is also my home theater system :( my specs are below and thanks again!

    Hi,

I have a GA HD 4870 card and when I use it in 10.5.7 without natit I get the pale blue screen with little dots that flicker when I move the mouse, and with natit I get the black screen.

I’ve tried the patch posted here, and the other motmot patch circulating around, but the result is the same. The only way I can get my computer to boot properly is to run it without natit in safe mode.

Btw I’m using VGA out using a DVI-VGA adapter. The other two ports are one DP and one HDMI.

So what do i try next? A new card?

    Hello,

I finally got rid of 10.5.7 update from IPC 10.5.6. Though I thought this would have made things get better concerning my HD 4870 1024mb. The thing is it does work with different kext, BUT I have the mouse lag problem, which is even more than annoying… I read a lot about it, some say it comes from my screen. I have a Hundai Quest B90D (19″). But i’m really stuck, I just don’t know what to do, as I have only one screen (ok, this is almost obvious ^^), and as it used to work with my old X1950 Pro.

I had successfully upgraded to 10.5.7, using Debeb’s combo, but would get a greyish screen with artifacts.
    System:
    Asus A8N-SLI Premium
    AMD 165 Opteron
    MSI ATI 4850HD

Found this (and other sites) reporting issue with some of the ATI HD series.

At first, I tried the Natit package (first link), but upon reboot I got a black screen. Looks like the hard drive was being access, but nothing on the screen.

I found 2 things, that I tried at the same time, so I’m which one (or both) did the trick:
    1) After install of natit package, upon reboot I used the -f option

    2) Put in a DVI2VGA adapter in the 2nd DVI port

This seems to work and now I have a 10.5.7 system!

NOTE: If I remove the DVI2VGA adapter and reboot, I get the black screen.

Netkas, thanks for all your work!!!

    Thanks for great job!
I’m trying to install OS X on HP 8530p (Radeon Mobility HD 3650) and have different results…
In the best case I have:
    1) Megalodon framebuffer (support 0:VGA,DVI + 1:VGA,DVI): scrambled screen (sometimes with mouse artefacts) – probably because this buffer does not support LVDS
    2) Hypoprion framebuffer (support 0:LVDS + 1:VGA,DVI): nice blue screen for a fractionof a second, then it goes black, but it looks like system is still operationable.
Having OpenSuSE 11.1 on the same notebook I had similar black screen with operational system until I switched ACPI off for videocard (#aticonfig –acpi-services off)
Is it possible to switch ACPI off for HD3650 in natit.kext?

As always, great work Netkas! Got my Sapphire HD3870 512mb fully working (QE/QI/QGL/sleep/full rez/fan throttling) with just the Natit.kext. However, with Snow Leopard released I had to upgrade to a Sapphire HD4870 512mb for when there is an official patched kernel with AMD support (great progress thus far). After the upgrade everything worked they way it did before except for sleep; many have reported that sleep does not wake, in my case sleep/restart/shutdown broke. I found this guide “http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/lofiversion/index.php/t170414.html” while trying to solve this problem. I followed the guide, took out Natit.kext (keeping ATY_init.kext…needed for QGL to work properly) , and the card was back up and running at 99%. I can sleep but when I wake the system hangs on the monitor trying to wake, then reboots on it’s own. I suppose it’s a small price to pay.
For anyone who has been having troubles with their Sapphire hd4870 512mb give the link I posted a try.
If ANYONE found a way to wake properly from sleep, please post your solution. My Hackintosh is 99.999% now. I want 100% perfect again! :P

    Hi,

I’m in 10.5.7 (Qoopz 9.7.0 kernel) and my HD 2600Pro Pcie (9589) doesn’t work with QE/CI. But resolution is OK with the drivers supplied with the ideneb DVD. I’ve tried the last driver pkg installer (http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=107526&st=2120&gopid=1314684&#entry1314684) but it doesn’t work. My device-id appears in the ATIRadeonX2000.kext (it’s the only one). I’ve tried to add the natit.kext but it’s not better, no QE. Do I have to play with the openGL.framework ?
    Plz give me a hand.

i have a palit 4850 hd and p5q deluxe mobo
    i tried installing natit.pkg, Legacy 4800 controlller and atiradeonx2000.kext

they all seem to work after they are installed, but when the pc reboots i get a black screen which says no signal.
I then have to boot using -s and remove and reinstall the kexts.

When I boot using -x, i get the proper resolution.

    any help is appreciated

I have a Sapphire 512mb ddr5 hd4870 and a gigabyte GA-EP-45 UD3R running indeneb 10.5.8 with that card in i can only get to frozen spinning circle with no colours in it, with grey apple boot screen. I have tried all the drivers and fixes listed above, i would try flashing my cards bios but not sure if i could still use the card in windows 7 after without having to flash it back?

I put a crappy old geforce in and i can boot ok.

    Thanks all.

    Hi,

    I’m a bit at a loss here…
I just replaced my HD3650 with a gigabyte HD4850 (512MB dual DVI) and no video. So I removed all the kexts starting with “ATI”. Then I do get it to work, but only 1024*768.
I have tried just about everything listed in this post, but I can’t get a higher resolution.
This seems to be because I removed the ATIRadeonX2000.kext (I read somewhere), but putting it back results in my screen not working at all…
Where can I find a ATIRadeonX2000.kext that works for the 4850?
Or is this caused by something else?

    thanks!
    V
