Drivers for Radeons 46×0/45×0/43×0
Latest 10.6.2 update have drivers for 46×0 45×0 43×0 card and we jsut made it to work.
You will need – a beta booter with GraphicsEnabler support for those card and drivers for osx (can find in irc.osx86.hu #radeonhd topic)
4650 – add devid into ATIRadeonX2000.kext after installing drivers, and remember to add your device-id to ATI4600Controller.kext and ATIRadeonX2000.kext after updating to 10.6.2 in future.
4670 doesnt need adding devid to kexts.
4350 – add devid into ATIRadeonX2000.kext after installing drivers, and remember to add your device-id to ATI4500Controller.kext and ATIRadeonX2000.kext after updating to 10.6.2 in future.
P.S. screenshots from 4650 card with DVI display, hdmi didnt work. VGA wasn’t tested, mobility wasnt tested too
P.S.S. this is only for snow leopard.

i’ve got the hd 4670 GPU. i can’t connect to irc to grab the files.. is there any way i can get the files. also tryed without the kext and just got blank screen
i have fixed DSDT so i don’t have to use -pci1.
ioreg -l | grep Peregrine gave me no output at all. i have discovered that even if there is no gui on the display the login screen is running because i have entered my password and after i pushed Return HDD started to work just like when i normally login.
there is no difference if use DVI or VGA. can’t try HDMI.

Worked on my 4650! Although only vga. It’s a Sapphire 4650 with DVI+VGA ports (ID 9498), I get black screen from DVI and VGA ports but using DVI -> VGA dongle i get video output on the VGA (from card) port. Is there a way to get video from the DVI port?

@petremetre Did you try to plug your monitor to the VGA port of your card AND plug a DVI to VGA dongle on the DVI port? That’s how it worked for me.
@ Meilo. no i didn’t try that. i don’t have a convertor (only v’got hdmi->dvi). my monitor has 2 outputs 1 hdmi and 1 vga. in both ports didn’t work. i don’t know why, i just get a blank screen, thats a good thing i supose because it shows that something is going on. i think that the solution is in ATISupport.kext. Also i tryed to remove all the apple unnecessary ketxs ati1000.. and what i found out is that snow leopard recongized the gpu but only in vesa mode
I have an innocent and maybe naive question:
Is there a legal issue for manufacturers of graphics cards such that they cannot write device drivers for OSX? It seems the only possible explanation for some of the most popular card lacking OSX kexts. Can somebody explain?

I installed the files from IRC that netkas posted with Kext Helper b7 and the new beta boot posted at the start of this post, nothing more. My card has 3 ports: DVI, VGA and TV OUT. Both VGA and DVI gives me a black screen too if I just plug my monitor to any of those.
However, I got it to give me video output by connecting my monitor to the VGA port of the card AND a DVI -> VGA adapter to the DVI port (so you end up with two VGA ports, plug your monitor to the card’s VGA port, not the adapter).

My Gigabyte 4550 works OTB with these drivers and the new Bootloader.
The DVI/HDMI/VGA output isn’t working perfect though.
Since I use HDMI to my TV I have to connect either the VGA or DVI port to something to get a picture.
Anyways I’m happy it works.
Update:
Did a fresh vainilla install of SL and installed the kexts and boot but forgot to add the ID of my card to ATIRadeonX2000.kext. After the reboot, i got a black screen (I was using a DVI->VGA adapter) so I unplugged everything from my card and connected my monitor to the DVI port (was gonna start up win7). By accident pc boot into SL again and there was video (with the dvi port).
So i added the ID of my card to the kext, did another reboot and I had video working using the DVI port. Not sure why it didn’t work the first time but I can confirm it works on my 4650 1GB card with DVI+VGA+TV OUT ports.

That is good news. It looks like you are the first recorded person to actually make the 4650 run in osx86. Mind if you share the exact model of your video card? I hope it is a low profile ready card.
More importantly, since it was “by accident”, can you recreate the installation? If you have a spare hdd, maybe you could use that and try all over again.
Are QI/CE fully working? Do you have the bug like the real iMacs have (Slow Flash videos + slow flash games + slow watching HD). Or maybe any other bugs that you noticed?

my computer boot fine from a leopard install disk using cpus=1, and everything works ok, but when i do and osinstall.mpkg the ps2 doesn’t work and i have to boot in safemode.
Do you have any suggestions? honestly i just want the screen to work in normal(non-safe) boot, so that my Wifi works, QE/CI isn’t a must here.

I do have spares HDs, I will install SL the same way I did and report back later with the info on the install, my card model and if the bugs are present or not. My guess is youtube for flash videos? any suggestion for flash games? and watching HD, I did try some 720p and 1080p movies without problems but I think I used VLC, not quicktime.

Yes you are correct, flash videos are youtube clips. With flash games, if you have facebook, you can try and search for Bejeweled Blitz 2 or 3 or if you don’t have an account you can try it here:

The reason I ask is because some owners of the new iMac with 4670 has this problem. I even went to one Apple store and I actually confirmed the issue. The weird thing is, the other imac right beside the one I’m using doesn’t have that problem. So I guess that not all new iMacs have it.

Since I see no comments on any 4350 cards, got an MSI one working without too much trouble, except ATI4500Controller.kext didn’t install the first time I tried (or maybe I missed it somehow). It did take a lot of googling for me to figure it out, and familiarity with linux eased the pain.

New SL install worked as well.
Installed SL on a spare HD, a vainilla install. After the setup part of SL, once I was in the desktop, did this:
- Installed the kexts posted here with “Kext Helper b7″ using it’s “easy install” mode.
- Replaced the “Boot” file on my SL HD with the beta Boot posted here.
- Reboot
- Once back in the desktop (at this time I had full res, but no QI/CE), copied ATIRadeonX2000.kext from “SL HD/System/Library/Extensions” to the desktop.
- Right click on ATIRadeonX2000.kext (on the desktop) to “Show Package Contents” and under “Contents” edited “Info.plist”.
- Under “IOPCIMatch” there is “0×94001002 0×94011002 0×94021002 0×94031002 0×95811002 0×95831002 0×95881002 0×94c81002 0×94c91002 0×95001002 0×95011002 0×95051002 0×95071002 0×95041002 0×95061002 0×95981002 …. ” . Replaced last one for the ID of my card, which is “0×94981002″ . You can check the ID of your card in “About this mac” -> More Info -> Graphics/Displays, your Device ID will be something like “0×9498″ and Vendor will be “ATI (0×1002)” , so the ID you need to put in the Info.plist is “DEVICEIDVENDORID”, or 0xXXXX1002 .
- Saved the Info.plist, closed all windows, then installed the (edited) ATIRadeonX2000.kext on my desktop with “Kext Helper b7″, again, using easy install mode.
- Reboot and everything working!
On the tests (did on both old and new installs):
- Youtube videos play fine, HD and fullscreen.
- Quicktime (new) plays 720p videos fullscreen smooth, no problems here.
- VLC plays 1080p mkv files smooth too (full 26+GB rips of some of my BD discs I have on an external HD for the WDTV).
- No problems with flash games either.
My card is a Sapphire Radeon HD 4650 1GB/DDR2 with DVI+VGA+TV OUT ports, came with a DVI -> HDMI adapter (that I don’t use). Couldn’t find the exact model on the box but I believe it’s this: http://www.sapphiretech.com/presentation/product/?psn=000101&pid=187
Only thing I noted is that video sleep doesn’t work. I set up the screensaver to kick in first then to put the monitor to sleep, but instead the screen just freezes (screensavers work fine). If I move the mouse or hit a key, monitor “comes out” of sleep and back into the desktop. Tried different time combos and always happens the same, so for now, I disabled it and just let the screensaver on and manually turn off the monitor if I’m gonna be afk a long time.
Good luck on your tests and hope this helps other 4650 users.
PS. Always had monitor on the DVI port, nothing more plugged into the card.

I just went to a retail store and bought a 4650 low profile card and it does not work. A dud! It was defective to begin with.
To make things worst, the card destroyed my PCIe x16 slot. My old card now does not work either but It works with my other PC. Now, my motherboard needs replacement
Anyway, that is fine since it still under warranty (and I was also having USB problems with the board) but it will take 3 – 5 weeks. So I have to wait to check if it will work in osx.
Oh well, talk about bad luck.

Now getting black screen on VGA/DVI as others.
2 stupid mistakes:
1. was booting from a production EFI partition instead of my test EFI partition with all my changes.
2. did edit /Extra/com.apple.Boot.plist but forgot /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist which was where OSX86 Tools copied my EFI strings for my 7900GS.
#2 was causing my boot hangs. Hope my confessions of stupidity help others.
Next steps my be 10.6.2 since it’s supposed to work on DVI.
It seems that some cards work and some does not.
For those people who made it work for the 4650, could you please post your exact model name or maybe links.

I tried all things that needs to be done and I think I did not miss anything. It just does not work. I’m suspecting that ATISupport.kext and/or Framebuffer is the one causing the black screen. Hoping for a patched kext soon.

With the 10.6.2 update the card is working fine with QE/CI included, didn’t have to touch any plist or change anything, it just worked (had to take out the sleep enabler extension)
The problem is that only the vga output works and not the DVI, so no dual monitor for me.

I have two 4550’s I have managed to get one of them working but not the other, can anyone shed light on why SL is not detected the other card at all?
I have a FORCE 3D ATI RADEON HD 4650 1 GB DDR2 VGA+TV+DVI, works perfect in 10.6.2 but I have DVI output only.
To use with VGA monitor I’ve removed GraphicsEnabler string in com.apple.boot.plist and installed EVOEnabler.kext (no more DVI output).

Hiya! Thank you for a clear and easy solution, I almost hit the wall with my HIS 4870 before I saw PCEFI 5 solution with GraphicsEnabler.
One small question: if I boot with this option, no QE/CI is working. If I omit it, the ATIRadeonX2000 leads to kernel panic. My old X1950pro was working with QE/CI, so I maybe didn’t clean something up before installing your booter? Can you please throw me a hint?

Sapphire 4650 1gb DVI+HDMI+VGA works! (id 9498)
I’ve used your driver in this mode (monitor in dvi) :
GraphicEnabler = Y in com.boot.plist on my flash drive
your ‘boot’ file in the root of the usb flash drive
booted and installed your kext with kexthelper
rebooted
modded the ATIRadeonX2000.kext with my dev-id
modded theATI4600Controller.kext with my dev-id
rebooted and… black screen… fuck it!
so i’ve found HDMI cable and connect my ViewSonic LCD monitor just for try…. and it works!!!!!!!!!!!
Full resolution (1080p), render info correct in OpenGL extension and also vga ram is correct!
i’ve made other test:
needed dvi+hdmi to works. And the signal exit not from HDMI connection but from DVI. So HDMI needed for something like ‘recognize’ the monitor.
HDMI connectedo to my hdmi monitor port and dvi to my dvi monitor port, and the system use this one.
Tomorrow i can try with a hdmi-dvi adapter instead of the cable.
With only hdmi cable it doesn’t work, and also with the hdmi cable connected only to the VGA card… the hdmi port must receive a valid link, not a died one.
I think hdmi-dvi adapter ‘validate’ the link itself.
i’m running SL 10.6.2 (beta booter, Chameleon 2RC3) in Vostro 1088. everything’s okay but my ATI HD4330 512MB.
The card is detected but i cannot change the resolution (1024×768). My native display is 1366×768.

Well, after changing the DevId (0×954f1002) with those of my ATI Radeon HD 4350, installing the kexts X2000 kext + the + the beta and I reboot the computer. SL boot with the boot flags cpus = 1-x32-v. Different scrolling text on the screen, and it ends with this message

Just got my Diamond 1GB 4670 working, HDMI only though,
Booloader + 4600 kext + add “graphicsEnable = Yes” to com.apple.boot.plist
When looking at the available resolutions I see 1080P as an option (whick I am using to view on my HDTV), but 1680×1050 is not an option (which is what my monitor uses). I believe this is the blank screen issue, I am going to try to add 1680×1050 this afternoon and see if my monitor displays.

Thanks for advice, I’ve managed to add missing resolution using SwitchResX. Yes, currently I use VGA (Dell 2209WA)
Another problems may be you can help with:
1. I can’t get DVI and HDMI working
2. Final Cut Studio installer says “… this system has only 0 MB of VRAM.” and “.. requires Quartz Extreme capable video card.”
I’ve tried to delete ATIRadeonX2000.kext, didn’t make any difference.
What else can be done to get all running properly?

Hi there! I have the ATI HD4550 and I been having a lot of troubles getting my video card to work.
I have tried to apply the “boot” from the “beta booter” file in the Extra/i368 folder of the Bootloader (Chameleon RC4) to replace the “boot” file that is already there, or how can I “install” it or where do I have to put the “boot” file?

You mentioned that 10.6.2 release supports ATI 45xx series Graphics cards for Desktop.What does this mean?Will the ATI HD4530 512 MB card on my Dell Laptop be supported or not? I specifically asked since you mentioned about Desktop.
Also in 70th comment on this page by sikabayan,he mentioned about Vostro 1088 with ATI HD4330 512MB card.I think it is laptop.So I think my laptop having HD 4530 card also should work right?Please do reply.

I have a Sapphire HD4670 Ultimate as second gfx in pciex4 slot, beside a 9800GT.
To get osx10.6.2 started I had to remove ATIRadeonX2000.kext.
Starting with EFI10.5 and Chameleon 2RC3 but the gfx is not recognized. System profiler shows just:

problems with the HD4670 on a 10.6.2 64bit.
1. EFI 10.5, original Kext
NO DVI, ONLY VGA, monitor isn’t recognized and 1680×1050 doesn’t work. Graphics Mode and SwitchResX didn’t help. Didn’t try HDMI or VGA2DVI.

everything works great on my saphhire 4670 but can’t get the god damn sleep function work,my card works on hdmi port, some strange thing was happening when try the sleep button, only cpu cooler was running and i switched from hdmi port to dvi and got my screen back, but only one time because if i repeat that move screen image never come back..its stuck

I hope you dont get pissed with a “n00b” question, but I need to fire it up.
I’ve installed Hazard SL 10.6.2 combo patch. Everything works perfect, except for the graphics adapter which should be supported under ATI4500Controller (the infamous 4570).
Through trial and Error I got to know the following:
ATISupport.kext is the first extention being loaded, and from there it should the ATI4500Controller and ATIRadeonX2000.kext (both having the dev_id). Well the ATI4500Controller doesn’t load
If I _DONT_ remove ATIFramebuffer.kext, the system gets into a black screen after the apple logo loading screen. The system appears to be working as there’s some ocasional disk activity.
Removing ATIFramebuffer.kext, I get to load the system fully and use Apple Framebuffer (crappy stuff, makes me remind of some old 2.4.x Linux kernels when Banshee and i740 came out).
You said before Mobility wasn’t supported. I can’t go against that, but do you know what is on the source of this ?
I have a running system at least, so I can dig up some more stuff.

I’m very curious about the fact that betabooter and EFI_10.5 enable different ports (as piero mentioned above). This implies that the bootloader has some say about which ports get activated and with some tweaks I might be able to get all of my 4650 ports recognized (VGA, DVI, HDMI). By looking at EFI_10.5 source I noticed that ati.c specifies 2 connector types using 4 1-byte numbers (I’m not sure what these numbers correspond to). Could you provide the source for betabooter so I can try to understand the differences between the ports configurations of the two?

I use a 4890 with the drivers you provide (so not flashed). It works perfectly, with all programs, except one game, Dragon Age (cider port). The screen just goes black. If I select my second monitor as my main monitor (he’s plugged on the old 7300) it works on it, but still not on the one plugged to the 4890.
I’m probably getting things wrong, but the company that made the game refuse to help me because “there’s no such thing as 4890 on mac” … (last time I buy a cider game). So any idea or did I just waste 60$ on a game ?

I’ve followed your efforts since the beginning and have derived great benefit from your work. I’d like to extend my deepest appreciation for your time and talent!
Just built a hackintosh with a Gigabyte P55M-UD2 motherboard, Intel Core i5 and an ATI 4670 graphics card, I’m close to having a great system. Using your “beta booter” I’m able to get full support for the ATI 4670 without any other modifications (I’ve not needed to tweak any of the kernel extensions) but my system runs at 1.5x speeds.
This is a known issue with the P55 chipset and there are other bootloaders that address the speed problem but none give me the support I need for the ATI 4670.
Netkas, please, is there any way that I can get the source code for your “beta booter” so that I can apply the P55 fix while retaining full support for my ATI 4670? This will complete my build and give me an almost totally vanilla system.

E-e-e-e-e-e-e-!!!!!!!! It’s alive!!! Asus EAH 4650 works perfectly!!! Оно живое, товарисчи!!!! Установил ATI 4600 contrler, ATI framebuffer, ATIRadeon X2000 и ATIsupport в Sys/Lib/Ext, boot кинул в корень/ и в Extra/, GraphicsEnabler = y, перезагрузил, выковырял из S/L/E 4600controller и X2000 на рабочий стол, прописал свой ID (94981002) и проинсталил заново, поправил права, перезагрузился и получил черный экран… Поменял выход с DVI -> VGA, перезагрузился и.., чуть не расплакался от счастья!!! Система видит карточку как 4600 (до этого видела как 4650, видела бл*ть, но не работала), производительность правильная приложения работают адекватно, разрешений экрана с запасом! Я счастлив!!! НЕТКАС!!! Спасибо тебе огромнейшее!!!

Damn… with all you pro’s talking about that driver stuff using loads of buzzwords, I feel like a complete idiot. I am used to PC’s and trying to transition to Mac. Mainly because I thought it might be a great idea switching from VIsual Studio and Windows Mobile to Xcode and iPhone / iPod Touch.
However… I bought the Mac OSX 10.6 Upgrade DVD and installed it to my Dell Studio 1535 Notebook using Empire EFI. It was pretty easy… and I even got wlan to work. However… I am too damn stupid to get my video card recognized and to work with more than 1024×768 (how many times did you hear that already?)
I believe I did a good job in finding this website however, lol (all that new keywords…).
So. My dell seems to have an ATI Radeon Mobility 4350 (95c4).
I believe I saw that people were able to get it up and running with the information provided here. However, I am not able to use these information because I don’t understand the necessary procedures yet.
If at all possible, can anyone please provide me with detailed instructions about how to get this card working?

I’ve tried several bootloaders, etc. efi empire.
Now I swich the my Hack boot for your boot..
I get to start the 10.6.2 but I do not burden the graphics driver and I do not recognize the monitor. The I get maximum resolution amending the com.apple.Boot.plist is 1400×1050 though indicated 1920×1080.

After 2 days of hard trying (got only Black Screens or Glichy graphics) I finally got fully working Asus HD4670 512MB, ID 1002:9490!
My setup:
iATKOS S3, boot_flicker, monitor connected to DVI2VGA dongle (VGA out doesn’t work, except when I plug DVI2VGA dongle (without monitor), but then I get fancy colors).
I also installed 10.6.4 update with success!
Steps:
1. Installed iATKOS S3 with integrated graphics card (because with HD4670 after installation I got Black screen, even in safe mode)
(options used: PC EFI 10.6, Graphics Enabler, voodoo HDA, NTFS-3G, everything else left by default)
2. edit /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist
add pmVersion=20 (in correct form) needed for 10.6.4 update kernel panic
3. rename original /boot to /boot2
4. extract boot_flicker and copy boot file to root folder
5. install updates
6. restart PC and change graphics card to HD4670
7. connect DVI2VGA dongle and monitor to it
8. Beautifully running MacOS

9. There is a Apple released kext update. Installed it and everything is still running beautifully!
