MacOSX 10.6.3 released

How to update – it’s easy.

Use any disabler for AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext, for example – NullCPUPM.kext, install it to Extra mkext and reboot, of course if you made AppleIntelCPUPM to speedstep your cpu, you can skip this step.

Make backup of your kexts, you might need some.

Remove SleepEnabler.kext if you use it, this is very important step, old sleepenabler + new kernel = panic.

Hit the update button, if you need to edit some kexts AFTER update and BEFORE reboot – download and install update from apple site.

After reboot – re-add your device-ids to kexts where you need it and enjoy.

known issues:

  • readeon 4830/4850 – new framebuffer has same problem as leopard’s – inability to work without dvi2vga dongle in second port, to fix it – use 10.6.2 framebuffer, to do it – make backups of the following kexts before update:ATI4800Controller.kext

Restore there kexts from backup after update and before reboot, or, if you already rebooted after update – use dvi2vga dongle to get display, and replace those files.

  • Backup AppleHDA.kext before update, you might need the old one after update if sound will not work. alc889a known to work ok with 10.6.3
  • GMA kexts is 32-bit only again

10.6.3 exotic patch pkg, finaly fixed (13:50 GMT, 30 March) – QE CI Exotic cards 10.6.3.pkg

Ok, so first version of pkg was messed up for MacPro+4890 because it had included 10.6.2 FrameBuffer, now it doesn’t have it, so should work fine. A little fix if you installed previous version of pkg and have some visual glitches on osx startup (like colored screen) – fix.pkg

Any tips for netbooks with Atom processors? I don’t suppose kernel support has been restored.

If we are still lacking kernel support, how hard would it be to binpatch the 10.6.3 kernel, much as the 10.6.2 one was? Is this something that could be automated with a perl substitution, so we don’t have to bother you? :-)

    new sleepenabler for 10.6.3:

  12. March 29th, 2010 | 8:01 pm

I have a black screen on boot with 10.6.3.

Everything was fine in 10.6.2 vanilla (Gigabyte EP35-DS3P, Q6600, 8800GT, all SATA & USB).

  13. March 29th, 2010 | 8:08 pm

Also on the known issues list is with Intel ICH where the IDE channel required a DSDT patch or IOATAFamily mod. These no longer work so you need the patched AppleIntelPIIATA from 10.6.2 to enable IDE again and avoid kernel panic.

  15. March 29th, 2010 | 8:44 pm

    I have a SAPPHIRE HD4870 1GB in my Mac Pro 1,1.

Do I need to do anything special before / after installing 10.6.3. I’ve never installed any sleep enablers.

With this card do I need to disable the AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext? If so, I need to install “NullCPUPM.kext” But what does “install it to Extra” mean? Is that a location?

Thank you for your help, I just want to make sure I’m not left with an inoperable Mac after this update.

Hello ! I’ve installed the QE exotic for 10.6.3. I’ve got a 4890 (powercolor). Since the update, I can’t calibrate the monitor. The colors are wrong. The card fan make some noise, and when I’m booting my Mac, I’ve got some artefacts (?) on the startup screen.
    (sorry for my english)

  17. Brent Austin
    March 29th, 2010 | 9:00 pm

I installed the combo update on my Mac Pro quad 2.8. The update went perfectly fine. I then got the qe_ci update from Cindori’s Zeus app. Installed and rebooted and upon initial bootup (after the login screen) I got a funky white mish-mash-pixelated screen for about 4-5 seconds then the normal OS screen showed up. However, whenever quartz is used on effects (mostly the transitions and scrolling) I get horrific flashing and banding across my whole screen. It’s almost as if the qe_ci injector install didn’t do anything for this 10.6.3 update.

///use the package i provided on my page, kthx

  18. Brent Austin
    March 29th, 2010 | 9:35 pm

netkas- I appreciate the advice but that IS the package I originally used. I used it first, got the flashing and banding, then used the package thru Cindori’s Zeus app and still got the flashing and banding.(I repeat I installed the qu_ci update AFTER I updated my system to 10.6.3.)

Should I try going thru the steps again? Should I re-install the 10.6.3 combo update, then your patch? I already did this but maybe doing it again will solve the flashing-jittering issue?

Mac Pro 1,1 with flashed 4890, but even after updating Cindari’s Zeus application and installing new updated QE_CL (and rebooting) it still won’t work. Whenever I do.. well, almost anything, I get graphic glitches across the screen, and the graphics card is working a lot constantly and making all kinds of noise (which is usually the case when QE_CI isn’t working properly). Just me who have this issue?

on Core i5 after update usb mouse and keyboard don’t work…

Your DSDT is likely to blame. I had the same problem until I swapped in a different DSDT file. I was using a generic Gigabyte one, then switched back to the proper one. I have an i5-750, P55-UD3L and everything works fine.

  25. Brent Austin
    March 29th, 2010 | 10:32 pm

Attempted to fix our issue via Cindori’s advice:

    1. Ran 10.6.3 combo update, again.
    2. Left combo update open, did not immediately restart.
    3. Ran netkas’ 10.6.3 qu_ci patcher
    4. Restarted mac pro.

Exactly as before. Heavily artifacted screen after boot up. Then regular screen and the flashing, banding, and jittering. All just like the first time I updated everything to 10.6.3.

Perhaps we Mac Pro owners do not need this older framebuffer like it is suggested? Perhaps that is something only hackintosh owners must have?

    March 29th, 2010 | 10:45 pm

    Hi netkas.

I have HIS HD 4890 (H489FT1GP). When I have patched ATI kexts with QE CI Exotic cards 10.6.3.pkg (after 10.6.3 software update) I’ve got artifacted screen after boot up.

Similar problem occurred with 10.6.2 (QE CI Exotic cards 10.6.2.pkg), but it was fixed after EVOenabler.kext intallation.

Will this card be supported in 10.6.3? If so, what kexts should be patched/installed to get it work?

    Thanks in advance.

I updated to 10.6.3 before it the kernel panic caused by SleepEnabler was noted. I have a hackintosh Dell 10v. Since I did not remove SleepEnabler it only boots into the “Please restart your computer” grey screen. Any ideas on how to fix this? Thanks in advance.

I updated my Q6600 and Radeon 4850 based System.
I deleted the SleepEnabler, put the new one in place and backed up the ATI Kexts mentioned.
Then I did a combo update and left everything as it is.
Rebooted, put a DVI2VGA dongle in place, screen was there but the old shaking bug appeared. Then I put a DVI2HDMI Dongle in place and there is no shaking anymore, desktop expansion works perfect.
Thank netkas for the lightning fast howto.

Using Mac pro dual quad core have done the same exercise as Brent no Joy

When i upgraded to 10.6.2 had the same problem with Cindori’s package but when i installed the netkas patch it resolved the issue worked through several reinstalls for Cindori but his package never worked for me.

I installed the netkas 10.6.3 patch first this time the problem manifested exactly the same as Cindori’s 10.6.2 patch maybe there is a clue as to the problem.

Also, if you’re having USB issues after the update, a temporary fix is to replace the IOUSBFamily.kext with the one from 10.6.2. Works just as before.

Lost mobo sound (ALC889a+DSDT fix+LegacyHDA.kext), apparently need the 10.6.2 AppleHDA.kext..

    SleepEnabler from works great.

Yup, 4870 and black screen after update. :( Reverted to 10.6.2 versions of the three relevant kexts (ATI4800Controller.kext, ATISupport.kext, ATIFramebuffer.kext) and it got video back, but of course none of the supposed enhancements…

For 4850 user’s i just add my devid to 4800controller.kext and install it with kextutility when my extention.mkext is done just reboot and everything works.(in case i have palit 4850 with 2 dvi port and my monitor is connected with vga>dvi adaptor. ofc u need graphic enabler y option)

Well I have used this method on one machine with a 4850 512mb card and one with a XFX 4870 xxx 1Gb card and it works flawlessly for me.

The 487O I also used the the modded EvoEnabler for the 4870 to Fix CE from in my Extra folder. I see that some say the 4870 works with no kext and some have to use this modded EVOenabler, I think this has something to do with if your 4870 is a pure reference card and close enough to be a match to the ones used by apple

I am also using Aseres booter + DSDT.aml from EFI-X users forum and the GraphicsEnable in my boot.plist

Thanks to this post I did 2 machines in 10 minutes Flat without a hitch.

I did both updates from Pure Vanilla machines, if your using Distro type installers while easy to put on the most times are a pain to update and trouble just waiting to happen

Netkas! YOU ROCK !!! Thanks a bunch without guys like you the OSX86 program would never be!!

As I see there is no more 64 bit Support for GForce 7xxx Cards in 10.6.3 .

There`s an Firmware update avaiable for GForce 7xxx Cards to support BootCamp Win 7.…iewlocale=de_DE

There are 4 .rom files within the package ( checked with Pacifist)

    NVidia Gforce 7300 GT – efi3452-345.rom
    Quadro FX 4500 – efi3452-348.rom
    7600 GT – efi3467-473u.rom
    7300 GT – efi3467-473vz.rom

Possible to use those .roms on “VBios” Option in boot.plist ?
Maybe that would help to get back 64 bit on SL

I fixed it all ! lol
Use all ATI*.kext files from 10.6.3, except ATIFrameBuffer.kext, ATISupport.kext, ATI4600Controller.kext, use the 10.6.2 version for those exceptions.
I zipped them for easy install. Just extract the kexts and install using kext helper or something.

I own 3 graphics cards: 9600GT, 8800GT, and 4830. On 10.6.3 (using Chameleon with GraphicsEnabler) the 8800GT just says “talk to the blue screen”. I read above about 4830 issues so I didn’t try it. The 9600GT sort of worked, but had a resolution problem, followed by some insane font problem where the anti-aliasing flailed and the screen looked like a migraine.

Fortunately I had a trusty old 7300GT which works perfectly once I plugged it in.

How do you guys choose cards that actually work? What is the secret? I have had some pretty bad luck.

@munki – did your 4670 work in 10.6.2 with all 10.6.3 ATI kexts – except ATIFrameBuffer, ATISupport, ATI4600Controller? Or in 10.6.3 with 3 kexts from 10.6.2?

I can’t run my 4670 (PowerColor AX4670-512MK3-PH with 512MB RAM) in OS X. In 10.6.0 only VESA mode or 1440×900 (depends of PC EFI version) with -x. After updating to 10.6.2 – system is starting and after few seconds I have only black screen – “no signal” on DVI, VGA or HDMI (with -x or without). I have tried PC EFI 10.5 and 10.6. The only way to start (in VESA mode, with -x) is delete X2000 and 4600Controller kexts. I have no idea what to do – please help… :(

    Hey Srry for bad english

I hope someone can help me because I search hole google with no results

I installed a clean snow 10.6.3 from a retail cd.
I installed some *.kext-files for audio and lan and everything works fine. I installed some *.kext-files from for my ATI 4890 it worked perfect without quartz :(. So I installed ‘QE CI Exotic cards 10.6.3.pkg’ + ‘fix’ to have quartz, again on a new clean install osx. Now if I boot in ‘-v’ mode I hear the sound of the welkcom video of mac but dont get the visuals, only the prompt/terminal (Dont now how you people call it). When I hit a btn it prints/echo some text of some audio thats played on that moment when I hit a btn. When I start normal mode the grey screen stays at the loading icon of mac (sound of welcome video works but no visuals). When I boot ‘-x’ mode he’s stuck at shutdown false or something.

So I almost there but can’t figured out what the problem is.

    My conf:

    Mobo: Asus P5QL PRO
    CPU : Quad core Q6600 @ 2.40 ghz
    VGA : XFX 4890 1gb Ram.
    Ram : 4gb dual Channel.

I looking almost 6 days to run Osx86 10.6.3 on my pc(I started to follow this OSX86 in the days whit 10.4.3 I Think 4 years a go, when the intel CPU started whit mac) this is the only thing that I can’t fix -> “THE F*cking QUARTZ” in 10.6.3
So if someone can help me it would be very nice.

    thx Imi

PS: I Think the Quartz work whit this ‘QE CI Exotic cards 10.6.3.pkg’ otherwise he doesn’t plays the mac welcome video/Visual shit.

    Hello netkas!

Thanks for the great QE/CI patch for 10.6.3, however, can you give us any details on what is needed to patch to add support for an exotic card like the HD4890? Was trying to get it work in 10.6.4 beta.
Adding device ID works good for the ATI4800Controller.kext, however, the ATIRadeonX2000.kext causes kernelpanic if loaded with the correct deviceID in the plist.

    Appreciate your advice
