A note about 10.6.4 beta

No Fermi (gtx480 gtx470) support and no Evergreen (ATI 5xxx) support.

Also, looks like support for hdmi/DP audio on nvidia cards (transitional, via realtek chip on mobo) is coming.(it’s just new SPAudioReporter reporting hdmi audio in System profiler)

Not a good sign- hopefully they’ll be adding it to the final release. A lot of people are waiting on ATI 5xxx.

That’s too bad about no 5xxx support as they are so prevalent. I’m surprised that Apple hasn’t wanted to include them in their own models?

How about better support for GTS 360M and other 3xx cards?

My Asus G51Jx with Core i7 & GTS 360M won’t even boot any DVD distros or retail from boot loaders.

So we need to wait for new Macs with low end ATI 5xxx and Fermi based cards, but Fermi low end are not even released for PC (

Do we still need 10.6.2 kexts to get HD48xx working without DVI>VGA adapter?

Any news on AppleHDA? Does it still has the hadcuff for non-885 boards? Another thing i keep wondering, what about the alc883 iMacs, how do they pass trough this check since the hda binary only states 885s in its hex?

What I don’t understand is that just because Apple doesn’t support it, why can’t an injector be modded to do so? I know that writing a driver is a major deal but injecting for say the gtx 470/480 even if it meant no Fermi hooks “should” be doable right?

One of you super gurus PLEASE help! Do what Apple should be doing yet again and give us a way to inject for our 480/470’s please…..

470/480 are new cards, maybe with new microcode, so driver must translate OpenGL calls to this new hardware level code, in this case we should wait completely new driver.

Dont the support 48XX series in the 104a32GM retail build?? then whats the atiradeon4800.kext in the extensions folder?

    @MacWynn

Unless apple start incoperating ati 5XXX series cards into mac pro, imacs and macbooks there not going to release a update with support for it.

GTX480 works fine under Bootcamp on a 2008 Pro with external power and a Mac 285 as boot card. Does no harm under 10.6.3 but crashes 10.5.8 shortly after boot up. So the hardware is OK. Shame no drivers looming in 10.6.4.

  19. May 5th, 2010 | 1:17 pm

its not looking good, apple was rolling with nvidia 9400 for quite a wile, and no real dice on any product that worked,

its like only netbooks still can, however, but they are so crappy.

i must admit when the price of the i3 comes down / and the pentium dual core versions come out, at the 300 400 price range, hopefully vendors do what gigabyte did, make hardware that runs mac well. its nice having everything work + sleep.

  20. May 5th, 2010 | 1:22 pm

i have yet to adopt any ati products, with all the nvidia products 7x, 8x, 9x, 200x, 300x –
i wouldn’t mind getting ati products, looks like you get more card for less money.

i have been sticking with core2 still, 31,41,45 series mobo’s, they work well still.

the new 6 core amd for 199.00 looks tempting, i am just not in the hack me up mood.

  21. May 5th, 2010 | 1:28 pm

audio through hdmi seems like a super fresh thing apple has just adopted, i am told my new MBP can do hdmi+audio out, something with the 320m, i will try it on friday see if it works, the mini display port 2 hdmi is 29 bucks.

by the way the magic mouse is kinda lame, if you are one that plays wow, some press left and right mouse button at the same time for movement, stock driver does not support that.

Well Charles. As Georgi and I said. We don’t live in the US! Believe me, I agree it’s a fair price. In our countries however, it’s like being assaulted. 799$ is fair enough, in Mexico it’s like buying a 15 inch macbook pro, but you get the basic macbook.

On Apple official website price of cheapest MacBook is 999 USD (in USA). The same model in UK costs 816 GBP (about 1195 USD). In Poland price is similar to UK. So, where is problem, you may ask? Answer: in salaries. With minimal monthly earnings about 1000 GBP in UK buying original Apple computer is no problem. In Poland, with monthly earnings about 350 – 500 GBP it’s not easy.
In my opinion, Apple should have low-cost line of their products, accesible to everybody.

Here a MBP 17 inch is 2900 USD the lowest – for example

    ??no Evergreen (ATI 5xxx) support??

    Hi Netkas,

What if i manually edited ATi4800Controller, ATIRadeonX2000 and Framebuffer kext’s could i force to to load ATI 5770 or is a completely new kext required for those cards as they use the Motmot Framebuffer? I’m guessing only a new ATIController kext would need to be released? I tried forcing but it sometimes KP’d sometimes didn’t. Dev ID: 68b81002

GeForce.kext have some Fermi reference inside with 10.6.3:
    strings GeForce |grep -i fermi
    nvFermiChannelManager
    nvFermiShared
    nvFermiDisplayManager
    nvFermiGLContext
    nvFermiHAL
    nvFermiSurface
    nvFermiSharedPixels

    Seems good ?

Do you know if Apple has altered the drivers for Nvidia 7 Series GPUs in 10.6.4?

It’s probably the last chance at seeing Steam/Source compatibility on my 24″ white iMac.

So, if I get a ASUS Radeon HD 5670 I’m pretty screwed ?
I use a 8800 GTS right now , and it works good with QE/CI. Thing is I would want a more powerful card for the windows part of the computer…. and that card specs looks good enough and have a decent price..

  37. June 7th, 2010 | 4:22 pm

    oh ma god.

    I updated 10.6.4 combo 10F564,
then disable QE/CI on my 4890

do not works dual monitor. (just mirrored)
    resolution is 1400×1050 fixed.

I always appreciate you, nekas. thx.

10.6.4 ATI 4850 drivers not working as expected. I had to revert back to 10.6.2.

  39. June 16th, 2010 | 11:54 am

@OmniAtlas: Have u tried ATI Kexts fro 10.6.2 after the update??? I’m still using 10.6.3 with kexts from 10.6.2 (ATI HD4870), and just working fine (full res, QI/CE enabled).

    Let me know, thanks! 😉
