to get it working go to #radeonhd

in channel topic click on first two links, and install them both, then reboot….should works then

p.s. second link is only for 10.5.1/10.5.0 systems, 10.5.2 doesn’t need it.

p.p.s. for 3850 card solution is in changing devid in bios, modified bios is in comments

do you have to use dvi2vga with these new drivers for HD3850/3870, or do they work with pure DVI?

Thanks so much, it works very well. I am testing the performance right now. Opengl performance seems a little slower than in windows, but that is to be expected with a first version. Thanks again.

Thanks for all your work Netkas. Everything works on Visiontek 3850 (0x9505) except that menus are blank. When I click to make the blank menu disappear, text shows briefly but not long enough to be useful. I can remember what the options are in most of the programs I use, so its not really a big deal. Using Kalyway 10.5.1 with EFI on E2140, 2gb ram, 945g chipset.

Netkas, I’ve always used RaBit to edit ATI bios before, but it doesn’t seem to support the 38×0 series yet. Do you know of another program that would work?

  13. Sarcoptic
    December 28th, 2007 | 6:46 pm

I tried the same. There is some sort of checksum built into the cards. RaBit does not update the checksum when trying to change the deviceID. If someone can find a tool or figure out how to calculate the checksum we may be ok. I too have a visiontek 3850.

3870 detected correctly in System Profiler but distorted screen on boot. Tried with both DVI and DVI2VGA. Works in the safe mode but no qe/ci and no screen resolution changes. What am I doing wrong?

    December 29th, 2007 | 3:40 pm

I tried changing the info.plist for natit.kext. I modified the VRAM and Memory totals to 268435456, still no luck. Is there a way to change what renderer is used? OpenGL extensions viewer points to ATI RV670 Prototype OpenGL Engine as the renderer…maybe we can repoint the card to use the HD3870 renderer as shown in your screen shots.

    Fanally, I did it!

This is the modified rom that SAPPHIRE hd3850(256Mb) to 3870. (just dev id. not oc)

    1. flash rom update.
    2. install pkg files (1,2)
    3. modify Natit/Info.plist (VRAM and Memory totals to 268435456)
    4. reboot.

Thanks for all of the work on this installer and the Triakis installer for the HD2900/2600!

What did you use to edit the ROM? Is there a new version of rabit out that will work with the HD? Or just a hex editor and no need for a checksum? I’d like to change the device id for a Sapphire HD2600 Pro 256MB to see if it solves the same menu issue with the Triakis installer.

another possible fix for 3850, without flashing bios

    removing ATIRadeonX2000GA.bundle from Extensions dir

or disabling compositing with any other way

u will not have qe/ci but opengl will work fine.

    December 30th, 2007 | 12:55 am

With a 512meg 3850 do you still have to write 268435456 to the info.plist? also once you change the vender ID on the BIOS does Windows or Linux have any problems with the drivers?

  28. hanulis
    December 30th, 2007 | 11:15 am

I just use hex editor(anything) and RaBit(for checksum).
It’s not hard, but native windows can’t reconize my vga card after bios update.

Now I’m using netkas’ solution. but.. little slow~ :(

I have leopard iatkos on asus p5b. Could it be cause of some settings in the bios? ! i cleaned the extensions folder of all other graphic drivers, but i always get the same thing!! Has there been any progress on a real solution for 3850 cards? The bios flash works fine for Leopard, but makes the card incompatible with Windows (both XP and Vista). It seems to me that the Mac driver must be checking for the 3870 device id at some point. Couldn’t that be removed or modified in the kexts?

How do I edit the bios to change the device id (since I have a 3850 512mb card), just using hexedit, won’t the checksum fail?

  47. elistes
    January 8th, 2008 | 3:06 am

To reply to my previous comment, I used a program called HxDen to edit the bios to change the device id to 0x0195 (9501) then fix the checksum by adding what was changed somewhere in the file. For full details, I’m on irc.

Hi All, probably thi is not the right thread but….is the only one active :)
i’m trying to get works two 7600gt on a p5k with gfx strings.
the one i plug onto the 1st pciex slot works perfectly but the second one is detected as a “monitor”…in system profiler i can 2 device under graphic/monitor…it detect the pci’s id but it seems not a graphic board but just a monitor out.. i can’t understand.
with natit drivers from kalyway i get death screen when i add the 2nd card.
with nvinject form kalyway both card seems to be working…i can’t try dual head but mac os works and it detect correctly both card.
Someone knows how can i use gfx strings insted of nvinject ?
maybe adding device2-properties and the string ? or something like this ?
Thank u all and thank u netkas for the great job…my 3 macpc client and the macpc server loves you :)

    Hey all,

I have a Gigabyte 3850 512mb card.. un-modified. I’ll take a look at the options here and try this tonight and report my findings.

I won’t be doing anything to the bios of the card because having it work with Windows is a must for me. Stay tuned.

  52. January 14th, 2008 | 7:52 pm

Lastexile (anyone?) – can you send me the 3850 driver mods you made? I disable QE, and it works, but it ain’t pretty.

Also, does anyone know how to read temperature sensors for the video cards in a Hackintosh? I think we’re running the cards at full speed / heat – I rebooted into XP and found the temps were pretty high after running Leopard on idle for a long time.

Here’s hoping tomorrow they announce 3850’s in the new iMac’s! :-)

    Hey all !
I use a Mac Pro and were very disappointed when i heard that i not would be able to upgrade my mac with one of the new Video cards from the early 2008 Mac Pro.
I cant understand which shit apple is doing with that.
i want some faster video card than my X1900 and it seems that the solution would be the flashing of a new BIOS/EFI into a standard PC Video-Card.
But i´m not able or too stupid to got the needed things.
above netkas sayd that the things can be found at #radeonhd …… but if i use this address in my safari-browser ( i only seeh “It work´s” no more. Can someone please help me

it’s irc, get the xchat to join there

    u can’t just upgrade it….

imho i need at least one gfx which works fine in osx, and other one to use with it. first one need to boot osx, second one can be used with one of activators, like natit

    that’s imho anyway.

  55. Peter
    January 15th, 2008 | 1:19 pm

sorry…english is not my native language.
okay i will looking for xchat.
what do you mean with “u can’t just upgrade ist” what ? the 3850 !
mom… mean i need 2 Graphic-Cards ? i need an aditional card to the 3850 i.e. gf7300 or x1900 to boot my osx and then i can use the modded 3850 for my Main-Screen. ATM is use always 2 cards (X1900 and GF7300) because i have 3 Monitors.

  56. netkas
    January 15th, 2008 | 1:28 pm

3850 is not a good choose, still works shitty in osx, it needs reflshing bios, to change it’s device-id, then it works fine in osx (on hacks) and doesn’t work in windows, or e.g. 3870 works just fine in osx on hacks

  57. Peter
    January 15th, 2008 | 1:56 pm

    Hi! netkas !

osx on hacks means osx on other Hardware than apple ???
I have an original Apple Mac Pro !

Okay you know what i want ?
I want a better gfx-card in my mac pro than the x1900.
Waht should i do ? Is ther no way to flash an ATI odr NVIDIA Card to work with my MAc Pro ?

  64. Plympton
    January 18th, 2008 | 5:50 am

    3850 “workaround” with XP working:

Install driver under XP, make sure it works,
Install the IRC drivers (both files),
Boot into XP – HIBERNATE! (do not shut down – ever!)
Flash with the Change.rom as noted above,
reboot into XP – it will go into fits as it detects “new”hardware, etc… do not reboot!
Play games in XP, hibernate when done,
Reboot into OS X Leopard – menus are no longer white.

This works because XP doesn’t re-initialize itself after a hibernate, and assumes that the hardware hasn’t changed. I haven’t done extensive testing to see how well this works, but Crysis loads, and that’s all I care about for the moment until Apple comes out with a real 3850/3870 driver!

  65. Chigundo
    January 18th, 2008 | 4:31 pm

Interesting approach. So once you actually reboot, you have to do that all over again?

  66. plympton
    January 18th, 2008 | 5:33 pm

Reboot (meaning restart from Windows) yes – you’d have to do the flash-dance again. I’ve got an ancient 128MB USB Stick that’s bootable to DOS that makes it a 5-minute job.

If you hibernate first, then reboot all you want (switching between XP and Mac). Whenever you’re done with PC, just hibernate again. Computer turns completely off, and it will (for me) automatically reboot into Mac, bypassing my boot selector (dunno why – must be a Hibernate/BIOS thing).

I’ve been using Hibernate for years on modern computers and it’s pretty reliable – only need to actually “restart” once in a great while. It was unreliable in the 90’s, but now it’s pretty stable.

The only XP machine I have to restart a lot is my Media Center 2005 machine.. but that’s another mess!

  67. January 18th, 2008 | 7:27 pm

    Another 3850 update…

I had a brain fart, and while that was happening, I thought that there must be something else to this 3850 problem. I think there’s another number that needs changing to get it to work. (Can’t try now, I’m remote).

In Natit.kext, change the ATY,Rom# from 113-B2250F-207 to whatever your card’s string is. I don’t have an un-modified ROM at the moment, but the code on the change.rom file looks like 113-B34003-101.

I have a hunch that the driver is checking both a PCI device ID as well as a secondary identifying string.

    Damn I hate this needle/haystack crap…

    January 22nd, 2008 | 10:24 pm

Plympton- AFAIK, the only thing that was altered in the modifed ROM was the device id. Therefore, its the only thing being checked to determine whether its a 3870. I saw a post on the IM forum where you had to S&R with a hexeditor on the binary portion of the kext to change the existing dev id to yours. This was for X1000 cards, but the idea might be the same:

By this logic, the binary we’re interested in is here:

I did a search for both 0195 and 9501 and there were about 15 of each. So, I hit S&R to change them all to 0595 and 9505 respectively. Unfortunately, one made no difference and the other caused the kext not to load. I think changing only some of them might be the key.

Hi all I also have HIS Radeon 3850 512 MB and everything is working good (OpenGL, QE, CI) but I also have problems with blank menus :-( as you all

I think this is caused by transparency I don´t know… If it can be disabled…

The only solution for now is installing only the first file 2400/2600/3800…. not that 3870, this works for me but if you do this you will not have QE an CI but the resolution change work for ex. 1680*1050

I will look at this page every day… praying for link to driver that will fix this shit for me and of course you guys…. :-((((( sry for eng

first of all thanks to everybody working on it, i have a 3850, it’s working perfectly with the modified bios posted in this thread, exept that the card is 512mb and appear in mac os as 256 (i didn’t try to edit bios myself because i don’t know how to do it and don’t want to crash the card).I just put the normal card bios when i want to play with xp.

Is there a risk changing the bios often?

Skyfox – thanks for the info. I’m going to sit tight for a moment – I actually trust this machine with important info (I know, dumb, dumb, dumb – it’s a HACK!). Messing around with this and some other stuff brought out some crazy disk corruption problems. Fortunately, I’ve got backups of backups that are backed up, but this was getting nuts – I’d get R/W errors all over the place. Was it the heat from the card? Was my PS not up to the task (it was at 100% by removing the PowerPlay stuff – the card got HOT just idling there!

But after wrestling over just making this box a Windows box full time.. I couldn’t do it! I’m going to wait and get a card that works in 10.4.11 and see how Leopard develops.. I still don’t trust it as a hack yet!

i have ATI 3870, 500MB, DDR4, PCIe. I installed both files. No problems while install. But after reboot i see tons of squares which change color when i move the mouse.[/quote]

Same thing here with Sapphire Radeon HD3870. Tons of squares with weird colours after rebooting.

Netkas can you help us out?

  79. January 29th, 2008 | 9:35 pm

to Juggernaut: i have Sapphire too. No problem in Windows and linux, even while playing games. So, where is the problem?

Is there any special procedure to install those files? Or do i need exact version of MacOS? Can you send or publish those torrent?

Hi. I am wondering if the update 10.5.2 will have support for hd3850? Is that a dumb question? If so, sorry.

How many flashes can the bios chip on a 3850 take before it fails? I set up a tiny dos partition on my computer specifically for this purpose, as I switch between Mac and Windows frequently and must reflash every time.

Does Triakis’ 2400_2600_2900 work for anyone else? I have a ATI RadeonHD2400 Pro card, I installed it but my screen get s only vertical messy strips, I took a look at the two kexts, I did a kextload -t ATINDRV,kext and I got this message: can’t add kernel extension ATINDRV.kext (not a bundle), I downloaded the package again, I still get the same message. Can someone tell me what happen? Thanks.

OK, so I’m having trouble with the 3850. Very confusing following the comments. Which links do I have to download and what BIOS settings edit?

PLEASE help guys, I’ve been working on it for a few days now.

  84. February 4th, 2008 | 5:48 am

Everyting working except the menus on the 3850. I/ve only insalled the two drivers, didnt do anyting else, since I cant figure out how to update the graphic BIOS and what to edit.

    Id really appreciate any help.

“How many flashes can the bios chip on a 3850 take before it fails?”

I’d wager you probably have about 1,000 flashes before asking for trouble, but these flash roms weren’t designed for what you’re doing. I worked for HP in printer manufacturing, and we reflashed prototype printers a lot – but there were always those versions where it just wouldn’t “stick” after a while.

You plays da game, you runs da risk…

I’m more worried about overheating because the thermal stuff isn’t enabled in the OS X driver and without a decent cooler on the card.

“I’m more worried about overheating because the thermal stuff isn’t enabled in the OS X driver and without a decent cooler on the card.”

I wouldn’t be that worried considering the HD3870 I have in my PC…the fan only spins at 30% no matter what. Even if it doesn’t clock down to 300 MHz, while idling it shouldn’t consume that much more power?

I have been trying to figure out how to get my ATI RadeonHD2400 Pro to work to no avail. And I have search for helps to no avail. The one string I got, from this forum gave me the blue screen hang, I finally fixed that, now in system profiler it show the display name, efi versions etc. But I am still getting 1024×768, without qe and ci. Have anyone ever gotten this card to work successfully? I don’t know what more properties it needs any more, Please help. :(

    Hi netkas.

I have a ATI Radeon 3870 and use Kalyway 10.5.2. Everything works fine, only the menus are blank. After selecting a menu, you can see them for 1 sec and then they are balnk.

Now, is it possible to fix this without flashing the bios?

Thank you very much for an answer!
