I had a go with the new drivers and my 5970 to no avail – crashes on bootup. To be expected though of course without a new aty file. Still smooth as silk with the mac mini drivers though. I’ll need to start digging around with the framebuffers soon though to try to get a DP->DLDVI adapter working through the third port for a triple monitor setup. Once I get my third monitor, I’ll let everyone know how it goes.
Done with 10.6.2 kext: ATI4800Controller, ATIFramebuffer, ATIFramebuffer (for dual screen ) in my Sapphire 4870 1 Gb, DVI/HDMI/VGA. Change ? did not register any change ! My system still freeze randomly when a card is harder to bear. So wait for 10.6.5 may this help
Thanks for this patch!
Installed the Apple graphic update, rebooted, screen was of course at half the res, installed your patch and rebooted.
Everything is good again, and i get quite a boost when testing OpenGL Extension viewer after the update 🙂
Not sure why but it doesn’t do it for my flashed Sapphire 4890 card (on a mac pro 2008) – I have to revert to the MAPP kext as provided by Cindori – and then it’s working fine (QE) – I had the same problem already with 10.6.4 update – and now as well… Any ideas what could be wrong?
[…] As usual when Apple releases graphics update for Mac OS X, Netkas posted a new patch to activate hardware acceleration of hacked PC Radeon 4890 in our Mac. More details here after: http://netkas.org/?p=515 […]
Do I need to do anything else than add the 4830 dev id into the ati4800controller.kext plist? Because after I had done that, the resolution went back to normal 1440×900 on both monitors but doesn’t seem to have acceleration with effects. Don’t have any 3d programs to test much. But stuff like transparency with the menu bar and Expose doesn’t transition smooth.
Unfortunately, I still have no Quartz. I was only able to get it with 10.6.4 by rolling back to the QE_CI 10.6.3 drivers. With GU1.0, nothing works. Not even 10.6.3 QE_CI drivers. 🙁 I mean, everything works fine except I have no quartz, no OpenGL, etc. 😛
4890 Sapphire New Edition w/ Hynix memory. Any ideas?
Mac 1,1 ATI 4890 (un flashed) GU 1.0 installed. I run an NVidia 7300 in slot 2 for days just like today. Installation of Apple GU 1.0 resulted in no video from 4890 – installed this patch, rebooted and I was back in business! netkas continues to ROCK! Many many thanks.
I’m running a flashed Sapphire Vapor-X Radeon HD4870 2GB GDDR5 card in my Mac Pro 2.1
It has been running fine under all 10.6.x versions/upgrades until I installed GrapicsUpdate 1.0. Under GrapicsUpdate 1.0 I get a fine image during boot (including the EFI menu) but when the normal Mac screen kicks in I get only a blank screen. Neither the QE_CI Exotic patch for GU1.0.pkg nor Natit.kext could fix the problem. I had to fall back to my Extensions from before the GrapicsUpdate 1.0 (thank you Time Machine!) to get my system back up and running properly. Any ideas?
Corrections / additions on above:
I’ve been running the 10.6.2 version of ATI4800Controller.kext, ATISupport.kext and ATIFramebuffer.kext under 10.6.3 and 10.6.4.
Device ID of the Sapphire Vapor-X Radeon HD4870 2GB GDDR5 car is 0x94401002
Hi Netkas. i have Sapphire 4980 with 2gb ddr5. graphics update -> reboot -> qe_cl_exotic patch -> reboot and no custom resolutions, only 1024x768x32
motherboard: asus p6t-se, i930, mac os x 10.6.4. retail. please help
actually it works with graphic enabler, but there is a problem. i have 2 monitors, one with vga, one with dvi. dvi is okay, vga doesn`t initialise with the driver. how to fix it ?
I’m desperately trying to get my 4870×2 working in snow leopard, but so far, I only have my native resolution. The apps I need to run require QE so it would be great to get it working, especially since I have seen it done. I have tried to download the necessary files, but most of the links (at least the important ones) are dead. Could you please reupload or email me the necessary files to get QE on a 4870×2?
Many thanks.

Hi Netkas. Thanks for all the great work! im an osx86 noob and Ive literally just booted up into snow leopard on my asus p6t mobo after hours of trying to figure it out! installed from retail 10.6.3 disk using myhack (usb install method)…i have a standard HD4780x2 which has 2 dvi’s..and also have 2 screens..is there a method of install you could give me to get qe/ci working? currently i have downloaded the following to try and enable qe/ci on my system:-
-Latest multibeast which includes a few things from yourself
-QE/CI Exotic Patch for 10.6.4

I have currently installed nothing..but would like to know if i can run 64bit…and if anyone could help me by giving me noob instructions,,,sorry for the long post…any help greatly appreciated!
Works great!!! Asus P6T…i920…4870×2…all the latest updates straight from mac…10.6.4..32 bit only!! due to ATY_init…anyone aware of 64bit 4870×2 working?
Thanks for the time and effort Netkas!!
Take your time! 🙂

I take it normal 4870 people (not x2) are okay then?
no news on the Intel GMA HD (5700) FB fix or something?
For 4870, if you have your bios flashed you should not worry, of course. If you haven’t flashed it, then, what are you waiting for ;)?
No, best to wait. all exotics will need a patch
4870 doesn’t need any patches 😛
Netkas – is there anything we can do to assist you in this. Test, etc?
I’d really like to help!
I have a 1,1 mac pro with a 4890.
I’m waiting because mise is HD4830.
Laurent, I forgot to add 4830 devid to ati4800controller.kext’s plist, so you will need to do it manualy
Thanks for this patch!

Just in time for my birthday, thanks a lot Netkas 😉
Thanks that was fast!! Downloading and patching now.
MacPro 1,1 with XFX 4890
Can’t wait to patch this when I get home.
Works like a charm on a MacPro 1,1 Sapphire 4890 1st Edition.

Software Update, reboot, oops, reboot -f(ignore boot caches), installed patch(didn’t logout), kextutility and a couple kextcache commands, followed by diskutil repairPermissions /, reboot to beautiful graphics.

Sapphire HD 4890 Vapor-X works, too…what would we do without Netkas!
Nvm about my original comment. I didn’t edit the other plist for some reason. Everythings working.
Thanks!
