Efi rom for 6970

You now can flash 6970 for macpro 3,1+, to get boot screen and almost working driver in Lion.

to get it you need to

1) install “standart” package from here – link.

2) switch off macpro, install 6970, boot(it will freeze at white/gray screen), reset(reset, not pweroff), boot to desktop

3) use RomCreator and get efi rom for 6970 or 6950 from this thread, then create hybrid rom and flash it in dos with atiflash and -f flag

4) enjoy

freeze might happen on cold start, reset if happens. another way – start up windows via bootcamp on cold start, then reboot into osx.

i use the package for hackintosh and have myself an 6950 flashed to run 6970. do i have to hybrid flash it aswell or is that only for macpro users?

if so, i cant find the 6950 rom for it, do you have a direct link for it netkas.

atm i can get my screen running at second boot, so i need to do something in the end to get it to work.

thanks for your great work netkas 🙂

i have install the package too, but i get a “still waiting for root divice” error!
you dont need to install the package! just install the whole update and follow natkas´ instructions . if you get an gray screen you have to reset your computer and NOT power off.
my radeon hd 6950 seems to be running perfectly now with fullscreen support and QE!

That’s very cool, but I have a question: molex to 8-pin adapter is enough for mac pro 3.1, or i need 2×6-pin to 8-pin and molex to 6-pin (three 6-pin adapters at all)?

    ///2xmolex->1x6pin + 1x6pin->1x8pin should be enough

Can’t make DOS bootable flash disk (made with HP Utility), startup loader not seeing it, why? 🙁 rEFIt loads Windows from Bootcamp instead of DOS.
And, how to reset MP? there is no reset button 🙂

I see black screen while it booting, can boot to windows, but if it freezes at startup (w/ black screen) i can’t run bootloader, nothing happens. If i don’t press opt (alt) key, it freezes and immediately power off when pressing power button. If press alt key, it freezes, but power button switch off Mac after looong pressing. That’s all.

    p. S. Thank you for power answer, i bought PowerColor Radeon HD 6970 with 6-pin -> 8-pin adaptor.

Success! Used atiwinflash for flashing, but there are some problems with Lion.
First of all, Chess not working, it freezes system and now Lion freezing at gray apple before loginwindow (without loading flower). And too many freezes at startup. In System Report card appears as Radeon HD 6970 with “NETKAS-ORG” revision, it’s OK?

Second, boot screen using 1280×800 resolution instead of original 2560×1600 (it occurs after PRAM reset). How can i set it to original? Lion cannot boot now, i’m planning to install old GTX285 card, boot it and install Radeon back.

    Hello, it’s me again 🙂
Tried verbose mode, it freezes after showing gray apple screen (after “Loginwindow application started”) on coldstart, no errors in log. The only way to boot Lion is boot first to Windows, then choose “Restart to Mac OS X” in Bootcamp. And I don’t wanna to run Chess 🙂

Especially the reset, not power off?

What is the difference between power off and reset? My Mac Pro 3,1 has (as far as I know) not a physical reset button…

///boot to windows with bootcamp then reboot to osx
/// the difference is in keeping memory content

For the Mac Pro users – make sure you install the the Standard package!!

I accidentally installed Native; needless to say OS X did not boot/ or no display.

Thankfully I had cloned the OS X boot disk and was able to boot from that to get it working again.

Add iTunes Classic Visualizer to the list of activities that freeze OS X.

    Standard visualizer works fine.

With my MacPro 5,1, cannot find way to flash hybrid rom. ATI Winflash does not see 6970 (suggests using ATIFLASH), and I cannot find working core boot image for ATIFLASH. For example,, Nero example creates boot CD that does not respond to MacPro wired USB keyboard, generates an error during build and does not complete, and did not work. Very frustrating. Until I accidently erased my BIOS in this update process, I have been doing extensive 3D gaming with my 6970 (works great with DDD Ignition). Any suggestions for a way to flash the output of RomCreator? Previously, I successfully flashed a 4890, so I am familiar with the process.

Thanks, I flashed my Saphire 6870 with the EFI Rom. Used the Zeus flasher, but it wouldn’t work with version 2.8 (kept giving me a repeated error about the rom being the same). I found using Lion I could flash my card with version 2.3 (even if not officially supported) after reading the forums.

Its best not to bother with the ATY Kext, I noticed odd behavior with it. Working under Lion and Snow Leopard with the EFI Boot screen. No compatibility issues with my ATI Radeon 2600 XT either…

For Dummies Guide for the dummies who aren’t willing to read:

    1. Download the EFI Rom from the Forums. YOU MUST SIGN UP TO BE ABLE TO DOWNLOAD.

    2. Download ROM Creator. You’ll need 10.7 installed.

    3. Download Zeus Flash (Version 2.3 is a must, 2.8 will not work so don’t update either).

    4. Use Rom Creator to create the rom. Save your rom.

    5. Use Zeus Flash 2.3 use your newly created rom, select Snow Leopard as your OS even if you’re booted in Lion. You’ll be fine.

If your flash is successful, you can now launch DVD Player and you’ll have an EFI Bootscreen. It will not affect Windows.Windows 7 will continue to work just fine. I bought a Sapphire 6870 1GB on for $155 and it’s working in my Mac Pro 2008, 2x Quad 2.8 Ghz which has loads of crap from many USB drives, Firewire Drives, eSATA PCI card, USB Mic Preamp, 3 Monitors blah blah blah blah. Flash works great.
