macOS 10.12 now uses Metal for GUI

Good news.

It’s not intel-only now.

On Nvidia (and most likely amd cards too) the GUI of macOS 10.12 now runs on top of metal, not OpenGL.

NVME Driver for OSX

Hello.

It’s announcement of availability of nvme driver for osx.

The driver is done by JimJ and avialable exclusively from MacVidCards.com

You can get the driver here – http://www.macvidcards.com/nvme-driver1.html

It’s osx driver, not efi driver. You can use nvme as data storage, not boot drive.

On hackint0sh side tho nvme could be used for booting if uefi driver for it present.

Big thanks to JimJ for developing this driver.

Enjoy.

Come on Apple, improve your 3d drivers

Few tests with same config (R9 290x, MP3,1, 2×2.8 GHZ cpu) in Unigine Valley. I know this cpu sucks for valley, but it’s enough to compare different OS/drivers.

Some Things about OSX 10.11

Metal is available on compatible nvidia devices (not checked ati yet) with both osx driver and official webdriver.

But metal is still not used to render GUI on nvidia (it’s used only on intel igpus).

And as I mentioned previously, final webdriver brings metal support to Maxwell, now just to find what it can be used for.

OSX 10.11 DP5 disables rootless=0 option

Since osx 10.11 dp5 (15A235d) it’s now not possible to disable rootless security by using boot argument rootless=0.

you now have to boot into osx recovery and disable system integrity protection from security settings there.

Is Metal used by OSX 10.11 for rendering?

In short, looks like OSX 10.11 doesn’t use Metal to render anything.

Update: Metal seems to be used for gui on Intel graphics.
